Mechanical Engineering (M.Eng.)

Our Mechanical Engineering graduate students represent the next generation of first-rate engineers involved in the research, development, and design of technological innovations in areas ranging from biomedicine and aerospace to rehabilitation science.

The Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering at Howard's Graduate School is designed for students interested in a broad range of areas in mechanical engineering. Our students engage in high-impact research to solve real-life engineering problems. Our program welcomes applicants with a background in mathematics, applied physics, chemistry, engineering, or physical science-related fields. Our graduate program will prepare you, like many of our graduate alums, for a career in research and development, or industry, or to pursue doctoral study. As a student in the Mechanical Engineering program, you may choose from four distinct areas of specialization in dynamics and controls in aerospace engineering, fluids and thermal sciences, applied mechanics, and design and manufacturing. The Department also has interdisciplinary offerings in atmosphere and materials sciences. In Washington, D.C., you'll have access to a robust high-tech research community and opportunities to collaborate with industry and government agencies on research. In addition, you'll enjoy a highly collegial atmosphere and work closely with a faculty research advisor committed to your professional development. Our graduate faculty are also notable for their wide-ranging expertise in mechanical engineering, including solid and fluid mechanics, control and aerospace, system design, and biomechanical engineering. Five world-class research laboratories support research activities funded by several governmental agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and agencies such as Boeing, General Motors, and Northrop Grumman.
